Literacy Takes Center Stage at Local Youth Clubs

At a time when literacy is more important than ever, a quiet transformation is taking place inside the walls of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Rockford—and it's being led by students who once hesitated to read a single word aloud.

In recent months, club staff have witnessed what they call “remarkable changes” among members, particularly those learning English as a second language (ESL). Students who once sat silently during reading time are now finding their voices—literally.

At United Way Rock River Valley, our work is guided by both a dedicated internal team and an engaged Board of Directors who share a deep commitment to Winnebago County. 

Together, we bring a balance of professional expertise, community knowledge, and lived experience to everything we do. Our staff leads the day-to-day work—developing strategy, building partnerships, and mobilizing resources—while our Board is made up of local leaders who offer insight, perspective, and governance rooted in a strong understanding of our community’s needs.
