Disaster readiness is about more than responding after something happens. It means helping people prepare, making sure community organizations are connected, and helping residents find the support they need when circumstances change quickly.
Prepare
Know where to find trusted information, make a household emergency plan and understand what local resources may be available.
Respond
During an emergency, call 211 to be connected with available services, resources and reliable information.
Recover
As recovery begins, 211 can help connect residents with resources for food, shelter, transportation, utilities and other essential needs.

United Way Rock River Valley supports the 211 information and referral service for Winnebago County. During an emergency, available resources can change quickly. 211 helps residents understand where to turn and connects them with local organizations that may be able to help.
You do not need to know which agency provides the service you need. Start with 211.
Working Together Through COAD
No single organization can respond to a community-wide emergency alone. That is why United Way Rock River Valley works alongside local partners through Community Organizations Active in Disaster, or COAD.
COAD brings nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, faith organizations and other community partners together to share information, coordinate resources and identify gaps in assistance.
This collaboration helps organizations work together before, during and after a disaster so resources can reach the people who need them as effectively as possible.
Be Ready Before You Need Help
Taking a few simple steps before an emergency can make a significant difference. Know how you will receive local emergency alerts, create a household communication plan, keep basic emergency supplies available and save 211 as a resource.
United Way Rock River Valley encourages residents to use trusted local emergency management resources for current preparedness guidance and instructions during an active emergency.
