Books for Brighter Futures wraps up with a memorable free community book fair.

What started with a goal of 2,000 books became something much bigger.

United Way Rock River Valley's second annual Books for Brighter Futures book drive wrapped up on Thursday, May 14, with a free community book fair that brought the campaign to a memorable close. By the time the doors opened at noon, the drive had already collected more than 10,000 books. This was five times the original goal.

During the five-hour event, 6,297 books and 740 magazines found new homes with community members. The books that remained won't sit on a shelf. They'll be bundled and delivered directly to Rockford Public School classrooms, where they'll keep working long after the fair ended.

Why This Work Matters

Research from 2025 found that only 36.75% of third grade students in Winnebago County were reading at a proficient level. That number is the reason Books for Brighter Futures exists. Getting books into homes and classrooms is one of the most direct ways to change it.

A Community That Showed Up

None of this happens without people choosing to act. United Way Rock River Valley is grateful to everyone who made this drive possible:

State Representatives Maurice West and Dave Vella, whose partnership and commitment to literacy in our region helped elevate this effort from day one — including hosting collection sites at their district offices.

Follett Content, which jumpstarted the drive with an anchor donation of 2,000 books and inspired the team to double the original goal. That single gift pushed the drive past its initial target and set the tone for what was possible.

Mel Welch and Alpine Kiwanis, a consistent and reliable champion of this work.

Henry, a sixth grader in our community who collected 556 books on his own. Henry's contribution is a remarkable example of what's possible when young people decide to lead.

Every collection site that opened their doors to the community — from Maze Books and Ida Public Library to City Hall and Realty of America.

Every single person who donated a book. Whether it was one or one hundred, it counted.
