When Storytime Speaks Your Language: Rockford Public Library
For many Rockford families, reading aloud at home can feel out of reach — not because they don't want to, but because the tools and training haven't been there. That's changing.
Through our support of funded partner Rockford Public Library (RPL), United Way of Rock River Valley (UWRRV) is helping expand the Modeled Moments Storytime Training program, now including a new Spanish-language track: Momentos Modelados.
These free, librarian-led sessions are rooted in the American Library Association's Every Child Ready to Read framework. Participants learn how to lead engaging, intentional storytimes at home — and leave with something tangible: a themed Storytime Backpack stocked with books, toys, and activity guides.

Meeting Families Where They Are
What makes this expansion meaningful is the intentionality behind it. Bilingual librarians now lead portions of off-site Modeled Moments sessions, ensuring Spanish-speaking families can participate fully — not just attend.
"It makes such a difference. My children feel more comfortable, and I can ask questions about the books in Spanish. It helps me teach them at home." – Elizabeth, mother of two
The Storytime Backpacks extend that impact beyond the session. Families leave with everything they need to recreate the experience at home — turning a single training into a lasting literacy habit.
"Everything we need for a fun storytime is right there. It has made reading a new adventure every day for my nietos." – Louisa, grandmother
Literacy as Community Infrastructure
Early literacy isn't just about reading. It's about confidence, connection, and belonging. When families have the language, tools, and support to engage with their children around books, the effects ripple outward.
RPL is one of UWRRV's funded partners, part of a broader strategy to strengthen education and economic opportunity across Rock River Valley. Investments like this one reflect a belief that lasting change happens when trusted community organizations have the resources to meet people where they are.
