State Representatives Dave Vella and Maurice West join United Way Rock River Valley staff and community partners surrounding dozens of boxes and bins overflowing with donated children's books collected during the Books for Brighter Futures drive.

When a community rallies around a shared goal, the results can be extraordinary. United Way Rock River Valley's Books for Brighter Futures book drive has officially wrapped — and the numbers speak for themselves.

We set out to collect 2,000 books for local students. Instead, our community brought in more than 9,100 books. That's nearly five times our original goal.

A Community That Showed Up

None of this happens without people choosing to act. Our gratitude goes to everyone who made this drive possible:

  • State Representative Maurice West and State Representative Dave Vella, whose partnership and commitment to literacy in our region helped elevate this effort.
  • Follett Content, which jumpstarted the drive with an anchor donation of 2,000 books inspiring us to double our original goal.
  • Mel Welch and Alpine Kiwanis, a consistent and reliable champion of this work.
  • Every collection site that opened their space to our community.
  • Every single person who donated a book.

One Student Who Set the Bar

Henry, a sixth grader in our community, collected 556 books on his own. Let that sink in. That's not a typo. One kid, one goal, and more determination than most adults bring to the table. This was an incredible accomplishment by one very dedicated community member.

Thank you! This is what community looks like.
