At the start of the 2024–2025 program year, Brookview Elementary’s Kids’ Time site, a United Way funded program of the YMCA of Rock River Valley, was full of potential but still finding its footing with adding a literacy component to their program. Site leaders were enthusiastic but unsure how to blend structured reading into a play-centered after-school routine.
With guidance from United Way’s literacy consultant Dr. Karen Walker and the YMCA of Rock River Valley, Brookview began taking small, consistent steps—like daily read-alouds and independent reading. Early visits showed challenges: students were shy about reading aloud, and staff lacked confidence leading group literacy games.
But the shift was remarkable. A book table was added after snack time, and older students began reading to the younger students, forming natural mentorships. “We had more children excited to read,” one staffer said.
By March, engagement had transformed. During an animal-themed book giveaway, students eagerly read National Geographic titles aloud and joined in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) crafts and games. One student who once avoided group reading proudly led a vocabulary activity.
Brookview served 87 children this year, making it one of the highest participating sites. Staff saw growth in vocabulary, confidence, and reading enjoyment. With coaching, flexible tools, and a passionate team, Brookview became a model for how joy and structure can ignite a love of reading.
