Terri Knight has always been guided by a simple philosophy: help where you can and stay true to yourself. A mother of two, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of three, Knight’s life has been shaped by family—but also by a deep commitment to public service.
“I’ve always liked working with the public,” she says. “If I can help someone with a problem, I want to do it.”
Knight spent 23 years working for the county, first in the clerk’s office and later as secretary for the county board, a role she describes as both challenging and rewarding. She handled committee meeting minutes, assisted the public, and ensured that constituents’ concerns were addressed without needing to go through higher officials.
“That was my kind of cup of tea,” she laughs. “I loved meeting people and helping them where I could.”
After her county career, Knight served as an elected official for Harlem Township for ten years before finally retiring. But retirement didn’t mean stepping away from service. In 2016, she joined the United Way of Rock River Valley Board of Directors, drawn by the opportunity to make a positive impact in her community.
“I knew the work they were doing,” she explains. “I thought, maybe I can help in some way—and I have.”
Her volunteer work includes everything from attending events to hands-on projects like stickering books for United Way’s literacy initiative. She’s particularly passionate about programs that promote reading among children.
“If we can help kids get into reading, they’re going to grow up a whole lot better,” Knight says. “Being able to read helps them communicate and develop in life.”
A lifelong reader herself—favoring mysteries—Knight admits she didn’t fall in love with books until after high school. Still, she treasures the moments she can share her love of reading with others.
Reflecting on her service with United Way, she highlights the organization’s dedication to helping people, supporting local agencies, and fostering literacy in the community. “It’s about bringing the community together and lifting people up,” she says.
Whether she’s volunteering, reading with children, or spending time with her family, Knight approaches life with warmth, dedication, and a practical mindset. “I just try to be myself,” she says. “And help where I can.”
