Rockford Public Library (RPL), in partnership with United Way of Rock River Valley (UWRRV), is proud to announce the expansion of its acclaimed “Modeled Moments” Storytime Training program with a new Spanish-language track: Momentos Modelados. These free, librarian-led trainings provide practical instruction rooted in the American Library Association’s Every Child Ready to Read framework. Participants learn how to deliver engaging, intentional storytimes and, after training, may collect a themed Storytime Backpack.
One of the most exciting developments is the inclusion of bilingual librarians in our off-site Modeled Moments sessions. We understand the importance of language and cultural connection and having Spanish-speaking librarians lead parts of the storytime ensures that even more families feel welcome, understood, and engaged.
"It makes such a difference," shares Elizabeth, a mother of two from the west side. "My children feel more comfortable, and I can ask questions about the books in Spanish. It helps me teach them at home."
Each Modeled Moments session also includes a special "Storytime in a Backpack." These themed backpacks are packed with books, toys, and activity guides, giving families all the resources they need to recreate the magic of storytime long after our session ends. We even provide samples of these backpacks during our off-site training, allowing staff to explore and understand their full potential.
"¡Me encanta la mochila de cuentos!" exclaims Louisa, a grandmother attending with her grandchildren. "Everything we need for a fun storytime is right there. It has made reading a new adventure every day for my nietos."
Another parent, Sara, beams, "Before, I wasn't sure how to make reading more fun. Now, with the tips from the librarians and the backpack, my kids beg me to read! It's amazing to see their love for books grow."
At RPL, we're not just circulating books; we're cultivating connections, fostering literacy, and building stronger, more vibrant communities. Modeled Moments is a shining example of this commitment in action, and we are incredibly proud of the positive feedback and the joy it brings to families.
