In turbulent times, whether it be dealing with domestic violence, other personal turmoil, or simply the cold weather, United Way of Rock River Valley offers a 24/7 service that assists local residents with the problems they’re facing.

By dialing 2-1-1, anyone can be connected to trained staff who will listen to their situation and refer them to the most appropriate source of assistance.

Sharon* recently received help from a 2-1-1 operator after an ex, who is affiliated with a Rockford gang, was harassing her. She was taking refuge at a local motel, but was running short on money and couldn’t afford to stay there anymore. Through 2-1-1, she was able to receive information on a local shelter that would take her and her children in at no charge, keeping them safe.

Sharon’s story reflects the life-saving services 2-1-1 provides 365 days a year. In 2018, United Way of Rock River Valley provided 4,700+ service referrals through the helpline. In addition to the help Sharon received, callers were provided with lists of local warming centers, information on social services and public benefits for those out of work, or even by functioning as a suicide prevention line for those dealing with unimaginable hardships, plus so much more.

Together with our donors, volunteers, and community partnerships, United Way continues to direct resources towards services like 2-1-1 that make all of our neighborhoods stronger.
