School will be out soon, and while plenty of people will be planning their summer vacation, it is important to remember those in the community who may not have the ability to spend the summer lounging. Instead, you can help make the summer better and more enjoyable by volunteering for community service opportunities in your area. If you are not sure where to begin, consider volunteering for one of these fun, outdoor ways to give back to your community.

1. Plant a Tree to Help the Environment and Bring the Community Together.

Planting a tree is a great way to help the environment and improve the beauty of your community. Make it a community-wide event by asking local companies to sponsor trees. It does not take long, and the tree will continue to grow with time, brining your community together.

2. Help the Elderly and Sick With Lawn Care.

The elderly and those that are sick often cannot spend hours outside in the heat. As a result, their lawns may grow out of control. Volunteer to trim their yards, or help them with cleaning. In fact, you can take helping the elderly and ill a step further by holding a fan drive, collecting fans to help seniors beat the heat this summer.

3. Tutor Students Completing Summer School.

There are students who will be enrolled in summer school, and just like the normal school-year, these students may need a hand. Consider tutoring those completing summer school, or host an event to show your support for them.

4. Teach or Coach a Sport for Disadvantaged Youth.

Speaking of students, disadvantaged youth in your community would greatly benefit from sports during the summer as well. Sports teach teamwork and life-changing skills. Teach or coach kids in your community in different sports. For example, hold free swimming lessons for disadvantaged youth.

5. Start or Work in a Community Garden.

Another great way to be active in community service during the summer is starting a community garden. While it may already be late for planting, you still plant squash, watermelon, pumpkin and tomatoes with plenty of time to harvest in the fall.

6. Prepare and Serve Meals for Children That Rely on School Lunches for Food.

Unbelievably, there are children that go without meals during the summer because they receive free lunches during the school-year. Prepare and serve meals to children in your community. You can even host a community picnic to give these children the meals they need. Remember learning and staying healthy begins with proper nutrition. In fact, if your community already has a garden, you can use the foods you grow in your meals too.
