Lathrop School receives bilingual books for summer Veggies and Tales program
This box of Spanish books is headed to Lathrop Elementary School to support its summer book swap program, Veggies and Tales. Every week during the summer, students and neighborhood children are invited to the school to swap books for a different title to take home and read. Students can also take home a bag of vegetables raised by the school garden club with recipes on how to prepare them for healthy eating.
Summer learning programs like Lathrop School's Veggies and Tales are critical in helping kids maintain learning and healthy throughout the summer months. The majority of students at Lathrop are from low-income families and over half are in the bilingual program. As part of United Way of Rock River Valley's Success By 6 school readiness initiative, we are able to provide those students with Spanish versions of popular early-grade reading books. Last year, more than 66,000 books were provided to English- and Spanish-speaking families in local schools throughout Ogle and Winnebago counties.
