Ellis Heights and Midtown residents strengthen their income stability through free tax assistance program

Strong Neighborhoods Taxes

(Rockford, Ill. - 02/20/2015) – Residents of Ellis Heights and Midtown District had an opportunity to strengthen their income stability through a free volunteer income tax assistance program conveniently located in their neighborhood. Through its Strong Neighborhoods initiative, United Way of Rock River Valley collaborated with Goodwill of Northern Illinois and Crusader Health Community to bring GoodTAXES, a free tax assistance program by Goodwill, directly to the neighborhoods. The program was offered in Crusader Clinic at the 1100 Broadway and 1200 W. State Street sites, allowing residents, especially those with transportation obstacles, to file their 2014 income tax with an IRS-Certified volunteer tax preparer.

As a result:

- 65 residents filed their 2014 income tax
- $110,585 in total Federal/State refunds returned to the neighborhoods
- $60,866 in Earned Income Tax Credits returned
- Approximately $11,635 saved by residents in tax preparation fees

With a combined 48 percent of residents in Ellis Heights and Midtown living at the poverty level, the program provided individuals and families extra income to put into savings and help pay for expenses throughout the year.
