(Rockford, Ill. - 11/20/2013) – United Way of Rock River Valley is joining #GivingTuesday, a National effort that harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners across the community to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season. Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday inspires people to take action to improve their communities and give back to help create a better world for everyone. Taking place December 3, 2013 — the Tuesday after Thanksgiving — #GivingTuesday will harness the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.

As the largest privately funded nonprofit in the U.S. and the world, United Way Worldwide is asking donors, partners and volunteers that are part of the United Way movement around the world to join #GivingTuesday. Everyone can find a way to give back — by giving, advocating (raising your voice to spread the word), and volunteering. Locally, United Way is encouraging the community to give a one-time online gift and to pledge to become a reading mentor through United Way I READ.

“As a founding partner of #GivingTuesday, we are excited to join other United Way’s in #GivingTuesday. Collectively we are redefining what it means to ‘give’ and inspiring people to get involved in creating lasting positive change in their communities,” says Paul A. Logli, President/CEO.

About #GivingTuesday
#GivingTuesday is a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season added to the calendar on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The second annual GivingTuesday is on December 3, 2013. In the same way that retail stores take part in Black Friday, #GivingTuesday encourages the giving community to come together.
