United Way's Strong Neighborhoods initiative is focused on bringing health, education and financial stability resources directly to children and families living in Midtown and Ellis Heights neighborhoods. At the same time, we uncover assets in these neighborhoods that are beneficial to the rest of the Rockford-area community.

In particular, we have established a Writer-In-Residence program at the 8th Avenue Strong Neighborhoods House, located at 908 8th Avenue in Rockford, Ill. This program provides an artist with office space in close proximity to the Midtown neighborhood to imbibe the spirits of the locale and to create or sharpen a presentation of work. We are offering the space during an eight to 10 week period for up to eight hours per week and United Way will provide beverages and snacks.

Artists interested in the Writer-In-Residence program should send a cover letter addressing how this opportunity will be utilized along with two pieces of sample work to This email address is being protected from spambots.
