Who is Lewis Lemon?

Yes, we "officially" celebrate Black History Month in February, but it's never too late to shine a light on the important figures that make our community great! Working in the Ellis Heights Neighborhood, I drive by Lewis Lemon Elementary School often. I'd like to share a little history related to the school's name!

Lewis Lemon is one of the founders of our great city! He was part of a 3-man team that landed on the banks of the Rock River in 1834. Mr. Lemon was a slave at the time, but he worked hard and eventually purchased his freedom for $800.

Today, there's a school in the heart of the neighborhood named in his honor. Every day, 300 students come here to expand their minds and realize their potential. What a legacy!  #StrongNeighborhoods#LiveUnited #LU815 #blackhistorymonth #BHM
