In this Midwestern City, there is no question that Rockford and surrounding areas boast a deep passion for the game of golf. This region alone possesses over 15 public and private golf courses. Due to the high interest of this sport, Rockford United Labor has been able to build a tradition of giving back to the community. For over 23years, Rockford United Labor has supported United Way of Rock River Valley’s community impact by raising additional money by doing what many of its members enjoy, playing golf.  The success of this annual event, held on Thursday, June 22nd, 2017, has raised over $300,000 in fundraising dollars over the years. These outings, along with many others hosted by labor organizations, benefits United Way and have a positive impact on the children and parents in our community.

Over the last few years, Rockford United Labor has specifically directed dollars raised from the Golf Play Day to United Way’s Success By 6 Initiative. Their generous gift has helped prepare thousands of young children in this community for Kindergarten. Initiatives like the Page Turner and Tiny Turner Strategies have expanded children’s at-home libraries by 12 books each year.  You can find out more about United Way’s Success By 6 Initiative by following this link.

Another union organization utilizing golf outings as a way to benefit United Way of Rock River Valley is Northwestern Illinois Building & Construction Trades Council. This alliance of 17 craft unions held their 5th Annual golf outing at Aldeen Golf Club on Friday, June 9th, 2017. This event also designated funds to Success By 6 , making it yet another great example of organized labor and the power players in our community coming together to invest in education. These funds are used to support programs under the Success By 6 Initiative such as the Born Learning Trails, Born Learning Kid Basics, and the School Readiness Calendar; all intended to increase family engagement and child development, specifically pre-literacy skills.

United Way is proud to be supported by the hard working men and women who make up the labor unions as they continue to advocate for improving the economic conditions in the communities where they live and work. This is the heart of the American Labor Movement, and we are fortunate to have great representation in our region doing great things. The Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #23 hosted their annual Charity Golf Play Day on Saturday, July 9th with proceeds also benefiting United Way. This outing nearly doubled participants since last year and continues to exceed expectations. When done effectively, golf outings are a great opportunity for leaders to come together to encourage networking and camaraderie amongst donors, while sharing the core value  to LIVE UNITED and fight for the health, education, and financial stability of everyone in every neighborhood.

These attributes of the game of golf must be the reason more and more organizations are utilizing golf outings as a way to give back to their community outside of the traditional workplace campaign. Rockford United Labor has 23 years under its belt organizing its annual Play Day, and has set the tone for other labor organizations such as Northwestern Illinois Building & Construction Trades Council and Plumbers & Pipefitters Local #23 to use this as a beneficial fundraising technique. United Way looks forward to continuing our partnership with local Labor Unions and encouraging this impact focused approach to building strong neighborhoods in our community.
