Creative Volunteer Opportunities for a Rainy April

While April showers may bring May flowers, finding ways to pass the time can be difficult. However, you can make great use of your time while the rain falls by exploring volunteer opportunities in Rock River Valley. In fact, think about giving back to the community through these easy and rewarding ways to volunteer during the rainy season.

Sign up to Spend Time With Those in Care Facilities.

People receiving care for addiction, illnesses or terminal illness deserve companionship and having someone nearby to talk to, think about and spend time with. In addition, seniors that live alone or in retirement facilities can benefit from an afternoon of conversation or just being together. You might learn something from those who are facing lonely times too.

Take up a Hobby, Like Crocheting Mats From Recycled Plastic Bags, to Help Those in Need.

When the rain pours, hobbies can fill your time, and depending on what you enjoy, certain hobbies can be turned into volunteer opportunities. If you knit, you might consider knitting prostheses for women who have undergone a mastectomy or crocheted comfort maps for those without a home and warm place to sleep. Virtually any hobby, including singing, can be used to provide comfort to those in need.

Volunteer to Help Seniors With Daily, Indoor Chores.

Seniors and individuals living with limited mobility may require help with indoor chores, like cooking or cleaning. Volunteer to spend a day cleaning, cooking or caring for someone who is unable to do so. It may not seem like much, but cooking a meal and helping some have a clean living-space can improve their quality of life and health.

Distribute Food to Seniors in Need.

Seniors may be unable to go grocery shopping or pick up medications. Therefore, consider volunteering to run these errands for them. For some, the costs of groceries may be too much, and they may rely on food pantries or food banks for their meals. However, they may still require assistance in getting the food to their homes.

For example, Senior Grocery Market provides volunteer opportunities for those able to help distribute foods from the Northern Illinois Food Bank to seniors above the age of 50. Moreover, volunteers can help select food items, package them and carry packages and bags to seniors’ vehicles.

Help People Make It to Health Care Appointments.

When you are sick, you probably do not want to drive to a doctor’s appointment, and if you have family available, you may not have to. But, some are not as lucky. Just getting to a health care appointment is almost impossible. Volunteer to take patients and others to these appointments.

Become a Mentor for Youth Seeking to Improve Their Education or Career Goals.

One of the most fulfilling and personally rewarding volunteer opportunities is being a mentor for youth and young adults. You can teach them how to budget and make positive choices that translate into career opportunities and educational goals.

Pass the Rainy Season by Finding Your Ideal Volunteer Opportunity Now.

Spring is a time to welcome nature’s rebirth, and it is also a time filled with plenty of rainy days. Rather than letting the days slip by, find your next volunteer opportunity online through United Way of Rock River Valley. Someone needs you. Will you answer the call?
