United Way of Rock River Valley provides funds to numerous programs that improve the quality of life in our area. However, there are some types of programs or services that we do not fund as a matter of long-standing policy. Among the areas we do not support are agencies with programs or services providing direct medical services such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, health centers and other health service delivery systems. Additionally, we do not fund programs that offer abortion services or which actively promote or recommend abortion services. For that reason United Way of Rock River Valley does not support Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Federation(NAF) and similar organizations that provide family-planning, obstetric and abortion services or abortion counseling. None of the programs we currently support provide any of these services.
We do provide support to families, expectant and young mothers, and adoption services at organizations like Catholic Charities (Diocese of Rockford), Children's Home + Aid, Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago (Rockford Region), Rockford MELD, and Youth Services Bureau of Illinois Valley.
We also note that both United Way Worldwide and United Way of Illinois, which both receive a modest dues payment from United Way of Rock River Valley, also provide no grant support to organizations like Planned Parenthood or NAF. The above representations can be verified by a review of all three entities' 990 Federal Tax Reports which, by law, are required to list all grants and monetary support of other organizations.
The decision of what organizations receive funds from a United Way is entirely local. Some other local United Ways may support organizations that we choose not to support. Some local United Ways will pass through donations to any not-for-profit located within or outside of a community. United Way of Rock River Valley is a "closed funds" United Way and will pass through designated funds only to organizations that are established as pre-approved community partners. Funds designated to other outside organizations are simply returned to the donor. All funds raised by United Way of Rock River Valley stay in our community unless a donor specifically directs his or her contribution to another United Way.
Since 1920, United Way of Rock River Valley has mobilized community resources in order to provide support of families and children with a special emphasis on improving education, promoting family financial stability and encouraging a safe and healthy lifestyle.
